In 1186 a Benedictine covent was founded and active until the Reformation in 1550

but by 1916 eruptions had all but ceased except in the few instances of artificially generated eruptions (by pouring soap into the channel)

In 1974, Nmaskar, as well as all of Sktustaahreppur, was declared a preserved natural site. Str: 148 mm 5,8 in.
